Vangie And A.B. Quintanilla's Marriage Suffered After Selena's Tragic Death
ICYMI Selena: The Series recently dropped on Netflix, and it’s consistently been No.1 on the streaming service ever since. The series follows the life of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, who was about to release her first crossover album before she was killed by the president of her fan club. Selena was just 23 at the time.
Selena’s family is a big part of the series, including her brother A.B. Quintanilla and his first wife, Evangelina “Vangie” Almeida. Note the whole “first wife” part. A.B. is now on his fifth wife, and he seems pretty smitten.
But back to Vangie. In the series, A.B. ends up locking eyes with a young woman during a performance and they end up heading to a corner of the club to get to know each other a little better. But A.B.’s dad rushes in and reminds his son that they have a rule about mingling in clubs. Well, the girl ends up showing up at another club and introduces herself as Vangie.
Fast forward to the next episode and—spoiler alert—Vangie is pregnant.
So, who is Vangie Quintanilla and where is she now? Here’s what you need to know.
A.B. and Vangie got together before Selena hit it big.
The two got married in 1988 in Corpus Christi, Texas, according to Hola! Selena’s self-titled album wasn’t even released at that point—that happened a year later.
A.B. said in a recent interview with Nothing Beats Experience that his family didn’t have a lot of money at the time. “This series, it’s going way back in time…to where I slept on the floor for a year,” he said. “It was one bedroom. It was my dad, my mom, and then Selena would sleep on the other side of my mom."
While A.B. didn’t mention his wife, he said that there were 13 people living together with one bathroom. “Thirteen people, one bathroom. You know what I’m saying?” he said. “And it was a very small house. The thing is, that those were a lot of hard knocks. In the Selena movie, it was like, ‘hey, we’re No. 1!’ It didn’t happen like that. That’s not reality.”
Vangie and A.B. have two children together.
Contrary to what the series suggests, Vangie and A.B. didn’t have a child together right away. They didn’t welcome their first child, Svani, until 1991. Their second, Gianni, was born in 2000.
The couple divorced after Selena’s death.
Selena was shot and killed in 1995 and, while some reports say that A.B.’s marriage suffered afterward, he and Vangie didn’t divorce until 2000, per Distractify. A.B. married Heather Grein three years later.
Vangie has moved on.
According to Vangie’s Instagram, she’s had another child, daughter Alana, who is now in second grade. While Vangie doesn’t ‘gram much, her account heavily features pics of Alana and her other children.
