Upstate NY brewery captures several honors in US Open Beer Championship
More than 9,000 beers in more than 170 different styles were judged as part of the 2024 U.S. Open Beer Championship in Ohio.
With three silver medals and a bronze, Utica-based Woodland Farm Brewery took home the most medals of any brewery in New York.
Organizers say the U.S. Open Beer Championship judges more beer styles than any other competition in the world.
Utica's Woodland Farm Brewery masters barrel aging
Woodland, which also has a tasting room in Booneville, Oneida County, snagged silver medals in the Barrel Aged American Barleywine and Brandy Barrel Aged categories for its Bourbon LB Lives.
Its Toasted Oak Bergian also earned silver, but in the Barrel Aged Specialty Barleywine category.
Woodland’s Bergian Cuvee tied for a bronze medal with a brewery from Georgia in the Blended Barred Aged Beer category.
How did other NY breweries do in the U.S. Open?
F.X. Matt Brewing Co. of Utica brought home two bronze medals for its Lake Placid Ubu Ale in the Strong/Imperial Brown Ale category and for its Saranac Root Beer in the Root Beer–Kids category.
Big Ditch Brewing Co. of Buffalo earned silver in the Session IPA category for its Dayburner Refreshing IPA.
Paradox Brewery in Essex County earned silver in the American Fruit–Orange category for its Kolsch Affair: Blood Orange
Big winners from the 2024 U.S. Open Beer Championship
Here are a few breweries to add as stops during your summer vacation destinations.
Third Eye Brewing of Hamilton, Ohio, was awarded the 2024 Grand National Champion by winning four gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals. Third Eye won the Brewery of the Year at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival.
Monday Night Brewing, from Atlanta, Georgia, placed second overall while Sun King Brewery out of Indianapolis, Indiana, placed third.
O.H.S.O. Brewery Gilbert of Arizona, Cherry Street Brewpub at Halcyon in Georgia, Urban Artifact of Ohio, Boulevard Brewing Co. of Missouri, Feather Falls Brewing Co. of California, Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. of Iowa, Sonder Brewing of Ohio, and Burgeon Beer Co. of California round out the top 10. Feather Falls and Toppling Giant tied for eighth.
