Two Indiana teenagers shot and killed by father, who then shoots himself
Young teenagers Harrison Hunn, 15, and Shelby Hunn, 13, were asleep Thursday night when they were shot dead by their father, who then killed himself, Fox 59 reported.
According to Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen, deputies were called after the children’s mother reported that she had not been able to contact her children or their father. The brother and sister failed to attend school on Friday, and when the school called to find out where they were, their mother, Stephanie Reece, went to their father’s house, where the teens had been staying for a scheduled visit. After no one answered the door, she called the sheriff’s office.
Arriving for a welfare check, the deputies found the father, Michael Hunn, 50, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His son and daughter had also been fatally shot while asleep in their beds, according to the sheriff, citing evidence found on the scene.
Nielsen told the IndyStar that the investigation was ongoing and that police had not yet determined a motive.
The couple had been married for about 17 years before divorcing in November 2017. Nielsen did not characterize their divorce as contentious, although court documents show ongoing issues between them after the settlement was filed.
Reece had been concerned about her ex-husband’s behavior, and had requested that his time with the children be reduced and possibly monitored with a blood alcohol level monitoring device. The children had reportedly told their grandmother that their father had been drinking and was not able to drive them to events.
A mediation agreement filed in April appears to show that the former spouses had resolved their problems, with Hunn agreeing to use a mobile breathalyzer system, to ensure that the results were immediately sent to Reece for a period of 120 days, and to pay weekly child support.
However, on Aug. 7, Reece filed a petition to hold Hunn in contempt of court for failure to pay child support, and the petition was set for a hearing next week.
Harrison attended Zionsville Community High School, and Shelby attended Zionsville Middle School. The school released the following statement on Facebook.
