Turn in beverage containers, redeem CRV fees
When purchasing certain beverage containers, residents pay a California Redemption Value (CRV) fee, which applies to eligible beverage containers packaged in aluminum, glass, plastic, and bimetal.
As of this year, the CRV fee also applies to boxes and pouches containing wine, distilled spirits, wine coolers, or distilled spirit coolers.
Residents can receive a refund of these fees by taking eligible beverage containers to a recycling center. The CRV refunds are 5 cents for containers less than 24 ounces and 10 cents for containers 24 ounces or more.
For distilled spirits and wine boxes and pouches, the CRV refund is 25 cents.
In 2021, 27.4 billion beverage containers were sold in California. Of those containers sold, 18.6 billion were returned for the CRV refund, a 68 percent return rate.
Tehama County Landfill officials advise those who do not participate in the CRV redemption program, to be sure beverage containers go into recycling cart with other recyclable materials.
