TrigonomeTREE set for year three
May 7—GROVE CITY — The Grove City High School TrigonomeTREE program is preparing to celebrate year three.
The program sees students from Janine Stuart's math class plant a tree in Grove City Memorial Park, near the high school. The project is aimed to give back to the earth every year after a long school year of using math papers.
This year the group in charge of the project are sisters Lydia and Taryn Peterson, along with Emmaleah Davis.
The trio work for the event includes picking out a location for the tree and spreading awareness of the event.
Two years ago, the class planted a Red Sunset Maple planted next to the Monteleone shelter in an effort to provide more shade. Last year they went with an Autumn Blaze Maple next to the Highland Shelter.
This year they have decided to go back to the Red Sunset Maple and will be planting it behind the playground, between the high school and the swing set.
The program has been heartily endorsed by Grove City Borough Council every year. Both Petersons attended the April council meeting to give an update on the project.
"We hope to see all of you in attendance and hope as many people as possible are able to make it to the planting ceremony," Lydia Peterson said.
Mayor Randy Riddle has been involved every year; his granddaughter and junior council member Emmy Riddle has been in charge of the event in the past and is helping again this year.
This year, the group will be getting help from other classes throughout the school. T.J Mourtacos' wood shop class will continue its tradition of making a plaque for the tree. Kim Hohman will have her class bake cookies and provide refreshments for the community in attendance. Ashley Hodge, who teaches a life skills class, will have her kids do fundraising for the event, selling popcorn and keychains.
The planting is a free community event that will take place at 2 p.m. May 17 in Memorial Park.
