Thompson Park fireworks kick off Fourth of July
Jul. 2—WATERTOWN — A decades-old tradition drew crowds to Thompson Park Tuesday evening to kick off the Fourth of July weekend.
People from across the north country convened in the heart of Watertown for the annual Concert in the Park and fireworks display.
The free event is hosted by the Watertown Noon Rotary Club with help from the city. Double Barrel Blues Band played at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Orchestra of Northern New York, which presented "An American Salute." ONNY's program included American music from beloved composers such as George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, John Williams, Morton Gould, William Grant Still and Leroy Anderson.
Fireworks got underway after sunset.
Jeanine and Freddy Cantrell, Watertown, have been attending the annual fireworks at the park for at least a decade.
They go to as many fireworks displays as possible, Mrs. Cantrell said.
"I've loved fireworks my whole life," she said.
Mrs. Cantrell said she likes to be part of the community and the Concert in the Park is a good way to feel connected to her fellow north country residents.
"We see people that we don't normally see too often," Mr. Cantrell said.
Zackery Lane, Watertown, was with his son Zackery Jr. enjoying the fireworks display.
Zackery Sr. said he hadn't been up to the fireworks in at least six years. He attended this year because his son wanted to see them.
He said he was looking forward to relaxing at the event. Lane is hoping his son continues to honor the tradition.
Vendors lined Thompson Park in front of the overlook where food and refreshments were available to purchase.
Mayor Sarah V. C. Pierce said there are a lot of logistics behind the event.
"I know how much goes into it and I just think that the community is extremely lucky that Rotary takes it upon themselves every year to put on this event for the community," she said. "I, for one, am extremely grateful that the Rotary does this each and every year."
She said residents look forward to the event because of the live music and the fact that it is a family-friendly event.
