Meghan Markle's estranged father Thomas accuses her of turning royal family 'into a Walmart with a crown'
The estranged father of Meghan Markle is speaking out to criticize his daughter yet again.
Thomas Markle, 75, appears in a British documentary titled Thomas Markle: My Story, in which he shares his perspective on daughter Meghan and son-in-law Prince Harry’s recent announcement that they will step down from their royal responsibilities and move to Canada. Markle expressed his distaste for the situation, claiming they are “cheapening” their role and "turning it into a Walmart with a crown," the BBC reports.
"When they got married, they took on an obligation, and the obligation is to be part of the royals and to represent the royals. And it would be foolish for them not to," he said in an excerpt of the documentary, which was filmed for the U.K.'s Channel 5. "This is one of the greatest long-living institutions ever. They are destroying it, they are cheapening it, making it shabby. They’re turning it into a Walmart with a crown on it. They shouldn’t be doing this.
"It's disappointing because she actually got every girl's dream," he added. "Every young girl wanted to become a princess and she got that and now she's tossing that away, for, it looks like she's tossing that away for money."
Calling the situation “kind of embarrassing to me,” Markle said he doesn’t anticipate Meghan reaching out to him any time soon. “I think both of them are turning into lost souls at this point. I don’t know what they’re looking for.”
Markle’s correspondence with his daughter is at the center of a lawsuit filed by the royals against the U.K. tabloid which leaked the private messages.
On Saturday, a breaking announcement from Buckingham Palace and a personal note from Queen Elizabeth II announced that Harry and Meghan would give up their HRH titles, “as they are no longer working members of the royal family.”
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful to Her Majesty and the Royal Family for their ongoing support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives,” read a statement tweeted by the official Twitter account of the royal family. “As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments. They will no longer receive public funds for Royal duties.”
