These Are the T-Shirts You Need to Be a Part of Electoral History
One good thing that’s come from this intense election cycle? The incredible T-shirts that have been designed by those who want to help you do your part, step up, and get a piece of history as the United States stands poised and ready, potentially to elect its first female president. A roundup of some of our favorites follows.
‘Dear Mrs. President,’ by Prinkshop ($35)
The activist T-shirt line from Kate Spade co-founder Pamela Bell has been showing its love for Hillary Clinton from the beginning. As Bell writes on the brand’s site, “I created this shirt one evening in my apartment in NYC. I was in a reflective mood, grappling with being an entrepreneur, a mother, a start-up founder, and a citizen.” $5 of each sale is donated straight to Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
‘Pussy Grabs Back’ by Female Collective ($32)
Everyone has heard (or heard about) GOP Presidential nominee Donald Trump telling Billy Bush about how he likes to “grab [women] by the pussy.” Feminist Fight Club author Jessica Bennett, performer Amanda Duarte, and artist Stella Marrs joined forces to let know Trump that bragging about sexual assault is not OK, and they’ve created a shirt that shares that message. A portion of all proceeds from this shirt go to RAINN (the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network), the group that also runs the National Sexual Assault Hotline.
‘Property of No One’ by Lady Parts Justice ($25)
This ‘Property of No One’ shirt, with its college athletics typography, is a great way to let people know that women play sports and that locker-room banter is no an excuse for sexual violence. Proceeds go directly to the work of Lady Parts Justice, the reproductive rights advocacy group founded by comedian and The Daily Show co-founder Lizz Winstead.
Marc Jacobs has been designing T-shirts emblazoned with HRC’s famous visage since she first ran for the Senate back in 2001. Now, he and his fellow designers Diane von Furstenberg, Jason Wu, Rag & Bone’s David Neville and Marcus Wainwright, and many others have each created their own designs in support of Clinton’s 2016 presidential run.
‘Cookies and Tea’ by I Feel Like Hillz ($25)
Refuse to apologize for being a boss with this T-shirt, which boasts an edited version of the quote that’s rendered in the style of Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo merch — something that’s brilliant on too many levels for us even begin to proclaim. All profits from the shirt, designed by New York-based content strategist Molly Smith, go toward get-out-the-vote initiatives.
‘Nasty Woman’ by Google Ghost ($25)
During Wednesday night’s third and final presidential debate, Clinton got a quick jab in at Trump as she was explaining how he would have to pay more Social Security payroll if she won. (She slyly added that, in that case, he would have to pay a higher rate, “assuming he can’t figure out how to get out of it”). Trump interrupted as she smoothly picked up her narrative again, with the comment, “Such a nasty woman,” and the Internet lit up. Women quickly turned his words on him, reclaiming the term as the ultimate self-identifying label for any woman who wants to see sexism squashed and who would like to put a woman in the White House. Google Ghost had this shirt designed and for sale by the time the debate was over, with 50 percent of all proceeds going to Planned Parenthood.
‘Nasty Woman’ by Lyndsay Eyth for Cotton Bureau ($26)
Why have one #NastyWoman T-shirt when you can have two? Especially when this one screams “Nasty Woman” in rose-gold foil.
‘Votes for Women’ by Emily’s List ($35)
Back before the passage of the 19th Amendment, “votes for women” was the suffragettes’ cry. Today, it’s a proud announcement that votes by women can make a hell of a difference. All proceeds of this long-sleeved T-shirt with a vintage design and slogan go to Emily’s List, which works to elect pro-choice women to all levels of government.
