The Pantone 2016 Color of the Year Is...
Pantone, the world’s leading authority on color, annually picks a color of the year. Marsala (like the wine, not the delicious food dish) was 2015′s top shade and the year before was Radiant Orchid (Kendall Jenner wore a Calvin Klein dress in Cannes in the pinkish tone). But for 2016, Pantone went wild (or just was incredibly indecisive) and chose not one, but two colors to reign supreme: Rose Quartz and Serenity.
Rose Quartz is a light rose, or more specifically, a “persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure.” Serenity, its cooler companion, is described as “weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.”
“In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design,” the company explains on its website for selecting double winners. “This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”
But if Pantone was truly interested in representing the muddling of gender definitions, then maybe it should’ve picked a color combining the two. Lupine seems nice. There’s always next year!
