In case you missed it, tinted lip oils are the new gloss. As the makeup category continues to lean into skin-care infused formulas, color lip products are, too, and the new Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oil dropped just in time for peak chapped lips season, a.k.a winter. Coming on the heels of Summer Fridays’ viral Lip Butter Balm, the nude-tinted lip oil claims to provide high-shine and deep hydration, and it’s already selling out at Sephora. Luckily, WWD Shop editors have been testing the product for over a week before the launch, so if you’re considering snagging a tube ahead of the hype, keep reading for our comprehensive and honest review.

More from WWD

The Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oil blurs the lines among the brand’s skin care selection, as its the first of the lineup to appear like a makeup product with a frosted tube and chubby doe foot applicator. It functions like a color cosmetic too, similar to other lip oils we’ve tested from Nyx and Rare Beauty, as it deposits sheer pigment in a range of four perennial nude lip hues — a soft pink, rose, mauve, and rosy-brown. Created as a versatile lip topper treatment, the Dream Lip Oil is formulated for application on bare lips or layered atop other lip products for additional shine and dimension. On the hydration front, the vegan formula combines nine plant-based oils to soften parched lips, along with nourishing vitamin E and plant-based collagen for replenishing plump-factor.

On the day of debut, the product’s already shot to the top of Sephora’s lip oil bestseller page, and is racking up over 340,000 TikTok views and counting. Considering that Summer Fridays’ signature squeeze-tube lip balm is one of the most popular beauty products on the app, and is commonly mentioned under the #LipOil trend that boasts a user following of nearly 3 billion, the Dream Lip Oil has real potential to be the it-lip product of the moment.

How We Tested Summer Fridays’ Dream Lip Oil

  • Product tested: Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oil

  • Testing time period: One week

  • Number of testers: Three shopping editors

  • Application method: I applied one application of the product to my bare lips and over other lip products, such as lip liner and nude lipstick

  • Key ingredients: Vegan oil complex (including apricot kernel oil, jojoba seed oil, avocado oil, grape seed oil, rosehip oil, squalane, raspberry seed oil, she oil, and castor seed oil), vitamin E, and plant-based collagen

  • Shades available: Blush Dreams, Pink Cloud, Rosewood Nights, and Soft Mauve

  • Size: 0.15 oz

  • Retailer availability: Sephora, Summer Fridays

  • Pros:

    • Sheer to light color payoff

    • Effectively smooths dry lips

    • Non-sticky shine

    • Lightweight, comfortable feel

    • Applies over other lip products without breaking up pigments

    • No discernible fragrance

    • Vegan and cruelty-free

  • Cons:

    • Large doe foot applicator lacks precision and may apply too much product in one swipe

    • Color payoff requires re-application after eating, drinking, or about 3+ hours of wear

  • Testing review: “This lip oil left my lips feeling soft, smooth, and plush after application. It maintains a slick — not sticky or slippery — texture for about three hours of wear and did not transfer outside my lip line or onto my teeth. Upon each application during our testing period, I found myself removing excess product from the large doe foot applicator, as it can deposit too much product on my lips in one swipe. The product effectively rejuvenated my dry lips (after being outside in winter temperatures down to 20°F) and is impressive compared to other lip oils and hydrating lip glosses I’ve tried.”

Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oil Testing Review: Is it Worth It?

Three WWD Shop editors have been testing each shade of the new Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oil for one week ahead of its launch. Our testers agree that the product feels moisturizing, lightweight, and smooth. We discovered that the lighter pink shades of the range, such as Pink Cloud and Blush Dreams, result in a sheer, your-lips-but-better color, while the deeper tones, like Soft Mauve and Rosewood Nights, provide more of a noticeable tint. The color selection is offered in a range of universal depths, which are suitable for matching skin tones to flattering nude hues, though we wouldn’t go as far to say that this lip oil is enough to replace color lip products in terms of standalone pigment. If you’re looking for a sheer lip gloss that feels especially hydrating, rather than floating atop your lips in thick globs, this product is a great option for your “no-makeup-makeup” beauty fantasies.

Upon application, the Dream Lip Oil offers shine that competes with other lip oils on the market, such as the Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil. I found it necessary to remove excess product from the wand, as the large doe foot applicator deposits an overwhelming amount of product on my medium-sized lips, however those with large lips will consider this a plus. The gel-oil formula glides on like a silky smooth dream, and leaves behind a very faint tingling sensation that feels refreshing (and signals to me that its key ingredients are likely seeping in). The gloss and color tint is temporary over a few hours of wear, however, even after the product has wiped off from eating or drinking, my lips are left plush and more hydrated than they started.

While I wouldn’t recommend this product as a heavy-duty emergency solution for cracked or flaky lips, I can attest to its excellent softening and moisturizing results on bare, dry lips. Over the course of wear, the formula never felt overly tacky or sticky — in fact, it’s so comfortable I nearly forgot I was wearing anything at all. As for price point, the Dream Lip Oil rings in at $26, which is two dollars higher than Summer Fridays’ wildly popular Lip Butter Balm. It’s priced fairly, in comparison to lip oils from competing brands, and is unique enough in texture, color, hydration power, and overall functionality to justify a try if it fits in your beauty budget. After extensively testing this lip oil, it successfully passed the test to enter my everyday rotation of hydrating lip products that I keep in my handbag or beside my desk at the WWD offices.
