We tested this $15 highlighter on three totally different skin tones — it's lit!
In Yahoo Lifestyle‘s “No B.S. Beauty” series, Beauty Editor Jacqueline Laurean Yates cuts through all the fluff and frills to share straight-up reviews of products that live up to their claims.
Just as the name suggests, Almay’s Make Them Jelly Hi-Lite ($15) is a jelly-textured highlighter that you’d apply on the high points of the face (upper cheekbones, inner corners of eyes, bridge of nose, and around the brow bone). It is available in two iridescent colors: Mermaid Magic and Unicorn Light.
After swatching both shades on my wrist, I instantly noticed how mesmerizing both hues looked on my brown skin and I began to dab it on my cheekbones. It was so freakin’ gorgeous!
I was dying to know how the jelly beauty product would appear on other skin tones, so I brought together Yahoo Lifestyle’s News and Features writer Kerry Justich and our beauty-obsessed Visual Editor Nadeen Nakib to give it a try. Once I saw it on their fair and olive complexions, I knew my love for this illuminator wasn’t in vain because Kerry and Nadeen were equally intrigued.
The pros
For starters, the jelly texture of the highlighter makes it fun to apply, and it melts right into the skin. We also noticed how it sparkles beyond cheeks and lids, adding a dose of shimmer to lips as well. The colors are rich and buildable — allowing for total control over how bright you want the highlighter to pop. A little application goes a long way. You can mix it with your moisturizer or add it to your foundation for an all-over glow too. It’s also fairly affordable when compared with many other high-end highlighters, which can be super-expensive.
The cons
If you don’t enjoy getting your fingers messy, you are definitely better off using a makeup sponge or brush for application. Additionally, you really have to steer clear of wearing any heavy face powders, as the jelly texture doesn’t mix well with it. Last but not least, there are only two colors. Maybe a gorgeous rose gold and a few other jewel-toned colors will be added soon? We all love to have options!
Final verdict:
“Love how fun the product is, in terms of both the colors and the consistency. However, it does pull at powders worn underneath. It takes some time to figure out the best application for your makeup routine.” — Kerry Justich, news and features writer
“It lasted a while on my skin, and the color is so pretty! It definitely feels like a highlighter that would wear best during the summer months. I’ll probably try using it all over my face once the weather finally breaks.” — Nadeen Nakib, visual editor
“Every time I’ve worn this highlighter, a day full of compliments follow. It’s hard not to notice, and it just looks so darn cool. It’s a multitasking product that can add just the right touch to your look. I feel like a modern-day mermaid of sorts when I wear it.” — Jacqueline Laurean Yates, beauty editor
