Teen calls police after her father takes away her cellphone for 'disciplinary reasons,' according to authorities
Believe it or not, it isn’t teenagers’ faults that they’re impulsive and may do silly things. Their prefrontal cortex is not entirely formed yet — which doesn’t develop until a person is 25. Therefore, teens process information with the amygdala — the emotional part of the brain.
In a fit of emotion, one Ohio teenager allegedly called the police on her father. The reason? He took away her cellphone for what authorities said were “disciplinary reasons.”
South Euclid, Ohio, officers were dispatched to a home on Saturday due to a report of theft. However, when they arrived on the scene, they found a 16-year-old female who said her father stole her cellphone.
The South Euclid Police Department wrote on Facebook: “Upon arrival, the 16 year old complainant said her father stole her cellular telephone. In speaking with her father, he said he took the phone away for disciplinary reasons. The girl insisted it was a Theft and she was entitled to the phone. Officers explained that having a cell phone under the age of 18 is a ‘privilege’ and not a ‘right’ as she believes. Officers suggested she follow the rules her father set, if she hoped to get the phone returned.”
Many parents on social media could understand what the father was going through. “Reminds me of the time my son when he was young said he was going to call the kids abuse hotline. And he wasn’t being abused I told him I would be glad to call for him but to keep in mind when they came to take him away he couldn’t take his pets or games or Xbox or anything he enjoyed. That settled that conversation. Never had it again,” one mother wrote.
Another applauded the police reaction, writing, “Good job, dad, and good advice in backing him up, SEPD! Let’s hope this girl will grow up to appreciate that her dad loves her enough to discipline her.”
