Taylor Swift Resumes Eras Tour After Death of Fan at Brazil Concert

The Eras Tour has resumed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, following dangerous heat conditions that reportedly led to the death of one attendee on Friday, Nov. 17 and caused the performance scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 18 to be postponed.

Temperatures in the area topped 102.4 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday, but PBS reports that it felt more like 138 degrees. Ana Clara Benevides Machado, the young woman who died that evening, revealed on social media that she arrived at the stadium around 11 a.m.—about seven and a half hours before showtime. Her friend, Daniele Menin, told local news outlet G1 that the 23-year-old passed out during "Cruel Summer"—the second song of Taylor Swift's three-hour set.

Things were so dire that Swift had to lead the charge in getting water to fans who were desperate for it, tossing bottles into the crowd from the stage and drawing attention to sections in need—despite struggling to catch her breath herself during the lengthy set.

The event organizers, T4F, later revealed in a statement that Ana was "promptly attended to by the team of firefighters and paramedics." According to the Municipal Health Department, she arrived at a local hospital around 8:50 p.m. in cardiorespiratory arrest. Officials have not confirmed thus far if the tragedy was caused by heat stroke.

Swift took to Instagram shortly after news of Ana's passing began to spread, admitting that she had very little information at the time but opening her "shattered heart" to send her love to her family and friends. "I feel this loss deeply," she added.

Just before opening act Sabrina Carpenter was set to take the stage on Saturday night, the show was postponed due to the lingering heatwave, with Swift making the announcement in a handwritten note composed from her dressing room.

"The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first," the "Anti-Hero" songstress added.

On Sunday, temperature highs had fallen to the mid-70s, and fans excitedly returned to the stadium.

During the Evermore set, as Swift performed "Marjorie," which is dedicated to her late grandmother, fans held colored sheets of paper in front of their phone flashlights to light up the stadium in the colors of the Brazilian flag—though it's unclear if this is something planned ahead of time or done in light of Friday's tragedy.
