While I love testing out new trends, I’m also pretty discerning about the fashion fads I avoid. Until very recently, one of those trends was ballet flats—a.k.a., the biggest “It” shoe of the year. No matter how many pairs I tried on, dainty flats never felt right on me and seemed at odds with my personal style, which leans toward chunkier, more structured silhouettes. Just when I was ready to throw in the towel, however, I discovered a shoe that, in true Cinderella fashion, appeared tailor-made for me: a pair of boxy, square-toe flats.
Clearly, I’m not alone in loving this style. Both celebrities like Katie Holmes and personal stylists have given square-toe flats their stamp of approval. Marina Ingvarsson, a New York-based stylist, confirmed this silhouette is decidedly “in” for fall, previously telling InStyle that the style will be “striding back into the spotlight this season.” Since snagging my own pair, I’ve styled the shoes with everything from baggy jeans to tailored shorts, proving they’re a versatile fall staple. If there’s one trend celebs love even more than ballet flats, it’s Mary Jane ballet flats—just ask Jennifer Lawrence and Gigi Hadid.
