Swizz Beatz Is Alicia Keys' Comfort Zone, Says Body Language Expert
Swizz Beatz almost blew it on his first date with Alicia Keys. The musicians first met when they were teens—Alicia was 14 and Swizz was 16—but Alicia was never about it, according to People.
“We ended up in the same circles at various awards shows and industry events,” she wrote in her book More Myself. “He’d usually pull up in some fancy car, rolling deep with his Bronx crew and shining with diamonds. I wanted nothing to do with that scene or with Swizz.”
They’d continue to run into each other from time to time, but things didn’t quite click until a few years later when they worked on a project together. After chatting with Swizz for a while, Alicia admits in her book, she realized he was deeper than she’d ever given him credit for.
She agreed to go out to lunch with him. But while she arrived on time, Swizz was late, People reports. She was irked at first, but she ended up enjoying herself once he showed up. And as they walked out of the restaurant, the pianist noticed a huge gift—a painting of a grand piano with paintbrushes on the keys—strapped to her car.
“That’s why I was late,” Swizz said. The painting was symbolic, he explained. She was the keys and he was the brushes.
Things took off from there. The two got engaged in 2010 and found out they were pregnant with their first child Egypt a few months before tying the knot in Corsica. They welcomed their second child, Genesis, five years later.
Swizz makes Alicia "feel my most powerful self," she told E!. "He's always encouraging what it is that I'm envisioning. I love that there's a support there."
This is something Karen Donaldson, body language expert says is evident in the way the couple moves. More than the kind gestures and gifts they've used to show how in tune they are with the other, their physical gestures are doing the same. Ahead, Donaldson breaks down exactly how.
"Alicia is leaning into Swizz," Donaldson points out. "Leaning in demonstrates that you care about what your partner is saying, doing, or thinking," she explains.
Couples touching heads usually means they have a similar mindset and by leaning, Alicia proves she's onboard with Swizz's. "Swizz in return leans in as well, which signals a solid union between the both of them," Donaldson adds.
In general, checking out your partner is always a sign of good body language. He looks at Alicia with adoration, says Donaldson. "We see it in the way that his foot is pointing in her direction and his head is titled downwards, with his chin also down."
"Have a look at how they are holding hands," says Donaldson. "Swizz has his hand on top with his palm facing backwards which signals a protective stance. He’s in protector mode." That's not to say he constantly operates in this way, but means he's in tune with Alicia's needs at the moment.
Alicia's smiling, but the rest of her body language signals tension and discomfort. She's gripping Swizz's hand and her fingers on her left hand are spread apart and rigid, which Donaldson says means she's overwhelmed. She "finds safety and security in Swizz."
"The forehead kiss tells us that there is strong emotional intimacy in their relationship," says Donaldson. "The forehead is an erogenous zone," meaning it's a point on the body that excites.
"The stimulation caused by the touch and warmth from someone's lips releases oxytocin that triggers the feelings of love and connection," explains Donaldson.
"The way in which they are smiling at each other and the fact that Swizz has his eyes closed tells us that they have a great level of playfulness in their relationship," says Donaldson. "They enjoy each other’s company as friends and lovers."
Swizz's closed eyes communicate a high level of trust. He shut off one of his senses and felt comfortable doing so in the arms of the person he loves. "Likewise, Alicia exposes her neck [as she looks up at him] which is a very vulnerable spot, this also signals the high level of trust she has with Swizz."
