Sweden's Princess Sofia Weighs In on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Choice to Leave Royal Life
Don't expect Princess Sofia to opt out of royal life anytime soon. Sofia—who joined the Swedish royal family after marrying Prince Carl Philip (the son of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia) in 2015—was asked about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to step back from their roles, and if she'd consider doing the same. The answer was a definite no.
"No. Not really," she told the interviewer, in a new documentary for Sweden's channel TV4. "I think I have found such a fantastic balance, and I really see it as positive that I have made it through these stormy years. It is such a huge advantage, in that we have the opportunity to stand a little in both worlds."
In another section of the program, which was filmed during Sofia's pre-pandemic trip to South Africa, she did speak to the difficulties of transitioning into royal life, saying that she's found relief in her work in South Africa. (The Princess has been doing charity work in the country since 2010, when she cofounded the organization Project Playground with her friend Frida Vesterberg.)
"Since I became a princess, I have been through many identity crises. Here in South Africa I have a type of identity and when I come home I have something else. Here I am allowed to be who I want to be," she explained, per Royal Central.
Back home, she and Carl Philip recently celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary, and shared photos from the memorable occasion on Instagram. "Sometimes every human being comes to a decisive choice; a choice that determines your entire future and that is about who you are and above all who you want to be," read the caption.
