Suzanne Somers Broke Her Neck in 2021: These 4 Daily Habits Helped Her Heal
Two years ago, a fall down a flight of stairs left Suzanne Somers painfully aware of just how fragile life can be. “I broke my neck and spine, fractured my hip, injured my hand, and dislocated my jaw,” the beloved Three’s Company star shares with FIRST. “My road to healing has had lots of ups and downs.”
With time and physical therapy, Suzanne has seen that road level out, but she credits her husband of 45 years, Alan Hamel, with the secret to her healing: love. “I look at him and think, I’m so fortunate,” Suzanne says with a smile. And this Valentine’s Day, she’s celebrating the love that has healed her body and soul. “I used to beat myself up and always felt I needed to be better, but if I were to tell my younger self something now, I’d say, ‘Stop trying to be perfect — enjoy each day, you lucky girl!’” she adds. Here are more of Suzanne’s tips to fill each day with health and happiness.
Simple soothers ease stress.
“One of my favorite ways to de-stress is cranking up the music!” Suzanne says. “I love Sarah Vaughn, Bobby Darin and Ella. One of my goals in physical therapy is to return to yoga — it’s my bliss and a wonderful way to relax! My favorite pose is pigeon pose, which really opens up the hips and relieves pain and stiffness. It’s the simplest things that have become so meaningful to me.”
Healthy snacks satisfy hunger.
“I love snacking on persimmons, apples, pears, melons, tangerines, cherries, and mangoes,” Suzanne says. “And organic chips and salsa or Brillat cheese with truffle honey on a Raincoast Crisp cracker are great too. So yummy — and good for you!”
Blissful baths aid sleep.
For restorative sleep, Suzanne opts for Epsom salt baths to wind down before bed. “Epsom salts are loaded with magnesium to help calm you,” she shares. “Lighting natural wax candles helps too. Coconut, peppermint crème, and cinnamon sugar are ones I love in my own line. They contain healing essential oils. I also have a supplement called Calm Renew, made from L-theanine and lemon balm…it puts me right to sleep.”
Small acts of love keep the relationship alive.
Together for more than 54 years, Suzanne says she falls more in love with her husband, Alan, every day. How do they keep the flame burning bright? “Every morning, he makes me coffee and brings it to me in bed,” Suzanne shares with a smile. “He makes the best coffee — strong and organic from Trader Joe’s. It’s a spectacular way to start the day.” Suzanne says they also give each other a lot of attention. “We compliment and spoil one another. It’s about honoring and respecting one another and giving your partner what they need. He starts off my day in romantic bliss, and we just try to keep it going.”
