Strawberry season's just starting. Where to find and pick your own
When thinking of early summer fruits to pick, strawberries are a staple in northwestern Pennsylvania.
As the weather warms up, many families seek out fresh produce from Erie County farms at roadside stands or in stores. Starting late spring and throughout June, strawberry picking also is a family-friendly activity that many enjoy.
"Because of the warmer spring we had and the nicer winter, berries are a little early this year," said Tiffany Laboski from Finnell Farms. "So we're probably a week to 10 days ahead of schedule right now. We started picking for our market Tuesday."

How to know which strawberries are ready for picking
When picking strawberries with your family, always seek a nice red color. A general rule of thumb is if it's red, go ahead; if it's orange or yellow, let it mellow.
"You know what you like to eat," Laboski said. "If it's orange you might want to leave it on the plant for another day. You're looking for a nice red berry."
