'Stranger Things' Fans Have a New Netflix Movie to Hold Them Over
Millie Bobby Brown
Millie Bobby Brown might be playing a damsel in distress, but she's a damsel who can save herself. The Stranger Things actress stars as the titular character in the Netflix movie, Damsel, which she also executive produced. Although the fantasy adventure film, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, features a prince and a damsel, the streaming giant has emphasized, "This is NOT a fairytale."
When asked to described Damsel in three words at People Con 2023, Brown answered "fierce" and "layered." While she was admittedly stumped when it came to thinking of a third word, the Enola Holmes actress laughed, "Period and she slayed, quite literally."
Before she faces a fire-breathing dragon, here is everything to know about Millie Bobby Brown's new Netflix movie, Damsel, including its cast and release date.
What is the Damsel release date?
The film was originally scheduled to be released on Oct. 13, 2023, but will now debut in 2024. Netflix has not yet announced the official date. Be sure to check back for updates!

Is Damsel based on a book?
There is a book, but it came after the screenplay. The Netflix film was written by Dan Mazeau. New York Times bestselling author Evelyn Skye wrote the book Damsel, which was published in April of 2023, based on Mazeau's screenplay. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in 2022 that in "a collaboration with Netflix and Random House Worlds," Skye would release a novelization of Damsel.
"The easiest way to think about it is this: Dan Mazeau wrote the original screenplay. I was able to read an early draft and was given free rein to write my own version of the story, which ultimately became the novel," Skye said in a previous statement (via THR). "Both the novel and the movie may stem from the same origin, but they are also each their own unique works of art."
