Power suiting took center stage on the red carpet of the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday in Santa Monica, Calif., with stars including Stephanie Hsu, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Andrew Scott bringing their unique spins.
The resurgence of suiting at the event highlighted the fusion of power dressing and glamour, a combination that has been trending on the red carpet and fashion runways since last year. Brands like Alexander McQueen, Valentino and Jean Paul Gaultier have given suits oversized silhouettes, bold shoulders, embellished lapels and other elevated details.

Taylor Zakhar Perez wore a red suit from Alexander McQueen’s pre-fall 2023 collection. The actor styled it with a white T-shirt, giving a casual touch to his look, and patent leather booties by Santoni.
Andrew Scott
Brightening up the red carpet, Andrew Scott donned a tailored yellow suit, which he paired with a sheer white shirt and yellow loafers by Christian Louboutin.
Stephanie Hsu
Stephanie Hsu gave tailoring an extra sparkle, wearing a black jacket with crystal embellishments on its lapels. She wore a white button-down shirt from Scanlan Theodore underneath with a black bow tie. Her look was from Kate Spade’s fall 2024 collection.
Dominic Sessa
Dominic Sessa embraced a ’70s-inspired spin on power dressing. The actor wore a white tuxedo jacket and high-waisted pants in wool gabardine with a black shirt in silk muslin. His look was from Saint Laurent.
Colman Domingo
Colman Domingo wore a black and white tweed suit from Versace. He added a gray satin cape for extra glamour and completed his look with loafers by Jimmy Choo.
Emma Seligman
Director Emma Seligman donned a relaxed, oversized white suit with tailored wide-leg trousers. She completed her outfit with black pumps, adding contrast.
The Independent Spirit Awards, founded in 1984, celebrate the best films and performances in the independent film and television industry. The 39th annual ceremony, held in Los Angeles on Sunday, is hosted by comedian and former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Aidy Bryant. This year sees the introduction of a new category: Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series.
