Star Wars Almost Appeared In Marvel’s What If…? Series

Marvel’s What If…? just wrapped up its second season, with the curious series giving us a look at the strange possibilities of alternate universes that could have been a thing if just one thing had been different. The second season brought some interesting stories, but it was almost even more interesting, with Star Wars being floated for inclusion at one point.
In an interview with Moovy TV, What If…? lead director Bryan Andrews revealed that at some point, he and his writing team pitched a Star Wars crossover to Disney execs. While he thought the idea was great, and he wanted it to happen, Disney wasn’t a fan of the idea.
“We actually had a Star Wars/Marvel crossover,” Andrews said, “Matthey Chauncey, one of our writers, he wrote a really hilarious… there’s a reason that made sense, why it would be the case. I just don’t know if [Kevin Feige] wants to cross those streams, but it’s really funny. It was a love letter to old school Star Wars and it was great.”
Andrews went on to say that he wasn’t sure if they’ll ever be able to do it, but they are thinking about it and would like it to happen. Chauncey is said to be one of the lead writers of the third season of What If…? so it’s certainly possible that it could be revisited in the future, but Disney isn’t known as a particularly adventurous company. Still, with minor Star Wars references showing up in some other episodes, it’s not impossible.
What If…? was confirmed for a third season in 2022, long before the second season had even aired. Not much is known about the new season yet, but it’s expected that it will run for nine episodes, like the first two seasons, and be released sometime in late 2024 or early 2025.
