St. Joseph Reads offers training camp challenge
Jul. 18—St. Joseph Reads is finding ways for kids to get more involved in reading during Chiefs Training Camp.
The goal is for kids to read for 15 minutes each day and have a parent or guardian initial the reading log associated with the challenge.
Reading logs can be obtained at any of the St. Joseph Public Libraries or Rolling Hills Libraries.
The challenge will last throughout the Chiefs Training Camp.
"There's so much hype and so much focus on the Chiefs and training camp during these next few weeks, that just to get this little bit of tie in so they start thinking about something they maybe wouldn't think of during Chiefs Training Camp," said Carol Burns, the chair of St. Joseph Reads.
Burns said the challenge is a mini-spin on the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation and its Read for 15 program.
Not only that, but Burns also says it keeps kids engaged before school starts.
"It's an opportunity to get kids engaged in reading through the rest of the summer," Burns said. "So it's trying to encourage them to get excited about reading and put a little bit of a different spin on it because we are tying it to the Chiefs and Chiefs Training Camp."
Kids who turn in completed logs to the St. Joseph Public Library, Rolling Hills Library or the Mosaic Life Care medical tent at the training camp, will receive a 15 and the Mahomies challenge completion certificate along with a McDonald's gift certificate.
Completed reading logs must be turned in by the end of the training camp on Aug. 15 for young readers to obtain their prizes.
