Spook-filled week takes over Greenbrier County Scout Day Camp
CALDWELL, WV (WVNS) – It may not be October yet, but things are already getting spooky at the Greenbrier County Scout Day Camp.
Local Camp Offers Kids Outdoor Skills
This week, Girl and Boy Scouts gathered for the “Haunted Forest” themed Greenbrier County Scout Day Camp at Greenbrier State Forest.
At this camp, kids have the opportunity to get more in tune with nature, along with learning archery, how to use a sling-shot, knot-tying skills, and getting to spend some time in the creek and pool, among many other fun activities.
Co-Camp director, Emily Shirey explained to 59News what this camp is offering kids.
“We’re teaching kids skills that maybe never get to go to the pool. This is their highlight for the summer. They don’t go out in the woods. We’re teaching them and kind of hoping that we can get them outside, having fun, doing something that’s not in their usual routine, but that they might pick and take off with on their own,” Shirey explained.
This camp lasts from Monday, July 8, 2024 to Thursday, July 11, 2024 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Campers get to go home each evening.
There are around 163 campers in attendance ranging from first through sixth grades.
Middle and high schoolers who participated in this camp come back to help out as program aides and can eventually move up to do more work to give back to this camp when they become adults.
This camp has lasted for more than 40 years, serving the youth of Greenbrier County.
Shirey also told 59News how she has kept the memories of past years of the camp alive.
“Adults will come back and say, ‘Oh I did this when I was a camper,’ or, ‘I was here in this year.'” Shirey told 59News. “As I said, it’s my 30th year and I’ve kept all my T-shirts through the years and I have a clothesline of all the shirts and a lot of folks are going back to [see] these shirts.”
The next generation of outdoors sportsmen
In order to attend this camp, campers had to preregister a fee of $75 to secure their spot for camp.
