Wow, the Golden Globes Were Rough . Luckily, This Also Happened.
It’s that time of year again: All of Hollywood is focused on the monthslong awards circuit, with Sunday night’s Golden Globes kicking off the major awards. The Globes are known for being the “fun” awards ceremony because the alcohol is usually flowing freely. Last year’s Globes proved as much—you might remember host Jerrod Carmichael’s Scientology joke, Michelle Yeoh’s threats of violence against the producers, and much more—but this year’s ceremony, which aired via CBS/Paramount+, struggled, to say the least, between all the jokes that failed to land and the lackluster banter between most of the presenters. Nevertheless, there were a few bright spots before and during the ceremony. Here are the most charming, funny, and WTF moments of the 2024 Golden Globes.
J. Lo Being Forced to Assert That She Does, Indeed, Love Her Husband Ben Affleck
Jennifer Lopez stunned on the red carpet as she answered questions about marriage to promote her upcoming music video and single. However, things became awkward when red-carpet host Marc Malkin essentially asked Lopez the eyebrow-raising question of how she knew her reunion with Ben Affleck was going to last since she’s been hitched, or nearly hitched, so many times. Lopez handled the inquiry with class and expertly pivoted to teasing her upcoming single and video like the Jenny From the Block we know and love.

Nepo Babies Shining on the Red Carpet
While lots of Golden Globe nominees brought their parents to the awards, a few of Hollywood’s most famous actually showed up with their kids! Reese Witherspoon’s date was her son Deacon Phillippe, who looked dapper during the red carpet Q&A. Also spotted was Francesca Scorsese, one of Martin Scorsese’s daughters, who is most famous for somehow persuading the famed director to participate in her viral TikTok videos.
Host Jo Koy … Trying?
The comedian was asked, on short notice—allegedly just 10 days ago—to emcee the awards show, and unfortunately, it showed. His opening monologue bombed, as he made some ill-received jokes about Barbie’s “big boobs,” the size of Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan’s penis as compared with that of Bradley Cooper’s nose prosthetic in Maestro, Taylor Swift’s takeover of NFL coverage, and more that I’d rather not remember. The roomful of stars and Hollywood players was reportedly not pleased.
But on the plus side, Koy did get Meryl Streep to do the Wakanda Forever salute from Marvel’s Black Panther, so it wasn’t a total wash.

Charles Melton’s Earring
If you’ve been paying attention, you know that Charles Melton is the moment. The Riverdale actor—who was also the hunky star of an oft-forgotten Ariana Grande music video, but I digress—has been setting the awards circuit ablaze, shocking many who were stunned to see an actor whose most notable prior résumé item was a stint on a maligned teen soap racking up love from critics. Though Robert Downey Jr. ultimately took home the award for Best Supporting Actor, Motion Picture, Melton still had a chance to shine—literally. The bright glint of his singular diamond stud was a sight for sore eyes. I already knew that Melton was a good actor, but the degree to which he is becoming only more handsome continues to surprise me.

Ali Wong and Bill Hader Reminding the World That They’re Dating
Nearly everyone I know forgot that these two comedic actors are an item, somehow memory-holing the Barry star’s breakup with Anna Kendrick and the Beef star’s impending divorce. Suffice to say, the pair’s shared kiss—as the Globes announced Wong’s historic win as the first Asian woman to be awarded Best Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie—cleared things up and prompted a lot of all-caps reactions in group chats everywhere.
Kieran Culkin Proving He Is Roman Roy
Culkin won for Best Actor in a TV Series Drama for his heartbreaking performance as Roman Roy in the final season of HBO’s Succession. But even after his show has ended, the actor has proved that the Roy sibling is still within him, as his comedic acceptance speech—during which Culkin hilariously told fellow nominee Pedro Pascal to “suck it”—perfectly evoked everyone’s favorite snarky, foul-mouthed little slime puppy. Some may say Culkin was doing a great Roman Roy impression, but real Culkin fans know he was actually channeling his inner Wallace Wells.
Andra Day and Jon Batiste (Drunkenly?) Singing the Mario Theme
Musicians Andra Day and Jon Batiste made the audience giggle as they bumbled their way through presenting for Best Score and Best Song in a Motion Picture. Perhaps under the influence of some fancy champagne, Day and Batiste ended up laughing at how much they loved the iconic music for the video game Super Mario Bros., even putting their own spin on the familiar theme. Remember: This is all in front of Hollywood stalwarts like Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro. Petition for these two to host next year’s Globes?

Oppenheimer Winning Big
Barbenheimer reared its head again as cinephiles watched with bated breath to see who would win more awards: Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, with 10 nominations, or Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, with eight. Barbie may have won the box office, but in a surprising plot twist (or was it?!), Oppenheimer proved the big winner at the Globes. Barbie snagged two awards—Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Song—while Oppy took home five: Best Original Score, Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, Best Director, and the big one, Best Motion Picture Drama. Talk about going out with a bang!
