Skittles' New Mustard-Flavored Candy Is Garnering Mixed Reactions
Mars-owned candy brand Skittles has unveiled an unlikely flavor profile for its newest launch: mustard.
Yep, you read that right—In honor of National Mustard Day on August 5, the brand is collaborating with French's for a savory-ish (yet sweet?) condiment-inspired variety of its iconic circle-shaped candies.
According to a press release, the limited-edition release will feature a “tangy mustard flavor” combined with the candy’s “iconic chewy texture,” obviously doused in yellow coloring.
“Skittles is always looking to inspire moments of everyday happiness and deliver unexpected ways for fans to experience the brand,” Ro Cheng, Mars’ marketing director, said in a statement.
But only the most curious of tastebuds will be able to even get their hands on it, as it is not expected to hit store shelves. To try the new flavor, fans will need to look out for French’s “Mustard Mobile,” which will be stopping in three US cities: Atlanta on July 31, Washington on August 2, and New York on August 5. For exact dates and times, people are welcome to check out the scheduling info on the brand's website.
Additionally, interested fans can also enter an online sweepstakes for a chance to win a package.
Food brands often come out with wacky, bizarre flavors as a way to keep things fresh and garner reactions out of consumers, and this time is no different.
On social media, people openly expressed their feelings on the new flavor in the comment section of food blogger account Markie_devo's post about the "mouthwatering Mustard Skittles."
"That’s not a rainbow I want to taste. Bad ??. Go to your room," one Instagram user joked, as another followed up with: "I doordash and uber because the job market is horrible but people get a salary to come up with this crap? ????"
"?????? hard pass on these," another agreed.
On the other hand, some couldn't wait to try the new twist on the sweet product.
"Oh man as someone who truly LOVES mustard, I’d love to try these!! ??," one lover of the condiment proclaimed.
Meanwhile, another said it looked "intriguing."
Vote's still out on this one—yes or no to mustard-flavored candy? We'll let you decide, but for now, as the saying goes, to each his own!
