Shaun White Didn't Understand What Was Happening the First Time He Met Nina Dobrev
Shaun White and Nina Dobrev are nothing short of adorable.
At the 2022 Winter Olympics Open Ceremony, the three-time gold medal snowboarder walked out with Team U.S.A. to kick off the special sports event. The celebratory occasion marked his fifth and final time he'll be competing on the world's biggest stage. Although Nina won't be cheering him on from the sidelines in Beijing — no foreign spectators are allowed at the Winter Games — she'll still be watching his snowy rides from home and rooting him on.
ICYMI: The Olympic athlete and the Hollywood actress have been dating since 2019. Speaking with People, Shaun opened up about the first time they met, and admitted that he didn't know who The Vampire Diaries star was. Although the two had briefly crossed paths before, they were reintroduced when they were presenters at an event organized by motivational speaker Tony Robbins.
While attempting to grab a table at a packed restaurant afterwards, Shaun quickly learned of Nina’s celebrity after a waiter asked for a photo with her instead of him like he was used. "Can we get a photo ... with her?" Shaun recalled to the magazine. "And I was like, 'What's happening? What's going on?' It was actually really funny."
Fast forward, the couple moved in together during the coronavirus pandemic in May 2020. Though their relationship seemed to be hitting milestones quickly, having Nina in his corner has been an amazing experience for Shaun. "Nina's just been so supportive and so amazing through this whole process for me," he told the publication. "Through the pandemic, she was a lifesaver — she really made that time in my life special."
Shaun isn’t the only one gushing over their sweet romance. Nina discussed her beau in an exclusive interview with E!'s Daily Pop. Throughout his preparation for his last Winter Olympics, the Redeeming Love star has been there for Shaun every step of the way. "I am really excited for him," she said on the show. "Just to get into the Olympics at all is one of the hugest accomplishments, let alone to get in five times. I'm so excited. I'm so proud of him."
While engagement rumors swirl around them, neither of them have confirmed nor denied that a wedding could be in their future. But both of them agree that no matter the challenges they might face, like long distance, they are still head over heels for each other.
“Love is amazing and difficult," Nina told Extra. "Just because you find love doesn’t make it butterflies and angels. There’s gonna be tough times and good times, and it’s really about who you want to spend those hard moments with. And finding that person you can go through hell and back with.”
