This New Series Just Replaced ‘Virgin River’ as the #1 Show on Netflix
Move over, Virgin River. A new show just hit Netflix days ago and it’s already taken viewers by storm.
Called Selena: The Series (not to be confused with Jennifer Lopez’s 1997 biopic Selena), the musical show began streaming on the service on Friday and replaced Alexandra Breckenridge’s hit drama as the number one series on the most-watched list. We’re not entirely surprised, considering fans have been buzzing about it since Netflix announced it back in 2018. Here’s what we know.
Selena: The Series tells the story of the Mexican-American singer's rise to fame, beginning with her childhood and ending with her tragic death.
The official synopsis reads, “Before she became the Queen of Tejano Music, Selena Quintanilla was a young girl from Texas with big dreams and an even bigger voice. Selena: The Series explores her journey from singing small gigs to becoming the most successful female Latin artist of all time—and the years of hard work and sacrifice the Quintanilla family navigated together.”
Aside from Christian Serratos as Selena, the main cast includes Gabriel Chavarria as her father A.B. Quintanilla, Madison Taylor Baez as the younger Selena, Seidy Lopez as her mother Marcella Quintanilla, Noemi Gonzalez as her sister Suzette Quintanilla and Gabriel Chavarria as her brother A.B. Quintanilla. Hiromi Kamata is directing the series while Abraham and Suzette Quintanilla are executive producing alongside Rico Martínez, Simran Singh, Moisés Zamora and Jaime Dávila.
As we mentioned above, last week, Virgin River held the top spot for most popular series, surpassing a variety of other hit shows including Trial 4, The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit, American Horror Story, Cocomelon and Dash & Lily.
We didn’t think it was possible for a show to gain popularity faster than VR. But looks like Selena is giving it a run for its money.
