Serena Williams’s Runway Show Had the Cutest Finale of All Time
Serena Williams has been extremely busy this September. First she and husband Alexis Ohanian celebrated daughter Olympia's second birthday. Then she worked her way to the finals at the U.S. Open and ended up placing second after a terrific match with Canadian superstar Bianca Andreescu. Just 72 hours later, Williams had to scurry on over to New York Fashion Week to organize and present her latest collection for her namesake brand, S by Serena presented by KLARNA STYLE360.
And while it's been a wild rush to watch Williams bounce from one exciting venture to the next, perhaps our favorite part of the whole month thus far came at the very end of her runway show. That's because Williams took a bow after the show with none other than her adorable 2-year-old daughter, Olympia. The duo was wearing matching mommy-and-me ensembles and it was almost too adorable to handle. The only difference was that Williams sported an all-black pair of Nike high-tops while Olympia wore the most adorable color-block pair of kicks we've ever laid eyes on. (Seriously, Nike, please tell us they come in adult sizes too.)
Although Williams has shown at NYFW before, in partnership with HSN, this was the first time she was able to present her Serena collection as the sole creative director. Adorable surprise appearance from her daughter aside, Williams's show was an absolute hit. In an interview with Glamour, Williams talked about her efforts to include models of all shapes, sizes and skin-tones. “It's really important for me to be all-inclusive... I think it's so important for everyone to feel like they can see an outfit and think, ‘Oh, that looks like me and I feel good in it.’ It doesn't matter what color they are. I want them to be able for them to relate to someone.”
Williams also took a more elevated approach to designing this particular collection, offering significantly more styles than in the past, in addition to including more evening-wear options.
Although many of Williams's celeb friends sat front row for the presentation, including Kim Kardashian, Ashley Graham, Gayle King and Anna Wintour, there was one notable absence: Meghan Markle. There's no reason to fret about their friendship however, as the duchess was there to cheer on Williams at the U.S. Open final, even getting caught on the stadium's Jumbotron.
Congrats to Williams on what must be the most exhausting and highly successful September she's ever had. Did we mention we're not even halfway through the month yet?
