Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar Recreated Their 'Cruel Intentions' Kissing Scene
With a 2020 twist.
Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar recreated their iconic kissing scene from the 1999 film Cruel Intentions at last night's MTV Greatest of All Time awards – at least they tried to.
The pair won the award for "Most Iconic Kiss" (in 2000 they won "Best Kiss") and in their recorded acceptance speech, they attempted to redo the moment. Except, in classic 2020 fashion, there was a partition in their way. The clip ends with Gellar looking at the camera after having her face pressed against the glass saying, "Stay safe MTV and 2020 ... end soon."
All jokes aside, the friends got real about what the kiss meant to them and to their fans at the time. “I think the reason the kiss has resonated with people for so long is not just for the initial shock value but because it was a catalyst for so many young people to help them realize certain aspects of their sexuality and help make people comfortable to be who they really are,” Blair said.

“It also represented a paradigm shift to a new dynamic towards acceptance in pop culture. Also, it was super hot," Gellar added.
For the moment, the actresses opted for very different looks. While Blair went for a sparkly mini dress, Gellar went ironic with a KISS (the band) sweatshirt.
In a post on Instagram, Blair elaborated on her feelings about the kiss. "Looking back 20 years ago... A kiss. Between two young actresses. On screen. In a mainstream teen movie. In 2000," she wrote. "It was a sweet and delicious kiss for my character, Cecile. And she wanted more. And I must say it was a really good kiss. What feels so delicious to me now is how it isn’t shocking in 2020. It stands for a shift in thinking."
