Scarlett Johansson Nearly Ruined Elf on the Shelf for Her 7-Year-Old Daughter
Many parents have mixed feelings about the Elf on the Shelf. While it sounds exciting in theory, there’s something oddly daunting about moving the toy each night (or creating excuses to make up for your own forgetfulness). For Scarlett Johansson, the tradition has been a success with her two children: Rose (7) and Cosmo (6 months). Well, up until recently.
Earlier this month, the 37-year-old actress attended the premiere of Sing 2, where she chatted with E! News’ Daily Pop about her kids. While discussing holiday traditions, Johansson revealed that she nearly ruined the magic of Christmas for her daughter. The actress explained that Rose recently stumbled upon an off-duty Elf on the Shelf, which prompted an awkward cover-up story.
“I kind of killed the Elf on the Shelf tradition because my daughter found him in the box the other day,” Johansson said. “She was like, ‘Why is he in this weird dusty box?’”
Johansson immediately went into crisis mode and offered an on-the-spot excuse. “And I was like, ‘He lives there right before Christmas,’” she continued. “That was bad.”
Aside from the Elf on the Shelf, Johansson typically does a Secret Santa swap with her siblings, Adrian, Vanessa, Hunter and Christian. “We do Secret Santa,” she added. “It’s pretty competitive. My siblings are aggressive.”
Still, one question remains: Did Rose buy Johansson’s excuse about the elf’s pre-Christmas abode?
