San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts and Old Town Books host summer programs

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — This week, summer campers at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts are immersing themselves in the Art of Nature program.

Today, June 21, campers put the finishing touches on ceramic animal masks that were fired in the museum’s education department kilns.

Participants have been using natural elements to create works of art while enjoying activities such as hiking and cooking.

“Monday, they toured our ceramic exhibit, specifically looking at animal creatures made out of clay. They then worked with a local artist to create animal masks, adding final details today,” said Bekah Coleman, curator of education. “Every day this week, we’ve focused on different aspects of art and science, building on the previous day’s lesson.”

The Art of Nature program continues next week with the theme River Ramblers, featuring projects connected to the Concho River.

Meanwhile, at Old Town Books downtown, elementary students explored Music in Literature, including live readings accompanied by a local banjo player, exposing children to various forms of music through literature.

“Kids need something to do in the summer, and we are happy to help,” said Doug Powell, manager of Old Town Books. “We introduce kids to new music forms, from classical and jazz to R&B and soul, fostering a love for books and music.”

One more Music in Literature session is scheduled for next week at Old Town Books downtown.
