I started running when I was 51 years old after a very scary health crisis; I was lucky to be alive. My daughter was training to run a marathon and encouraged me to run a 5K with her—I agreed. I hated running in junior high and high school, it just wasn’t fun for me; so, I thought, what have I gotten myself into? After I ran my first 5K, I was hooked. I felt alive, healthy, inspired, excited, and invincible.
That summer and fall, I went on to run 10 races. I cheered on my daughter as she ran the Equinox Marathon that year and vowed one day I would run an entire marathon on my own. I’ve since completed a half-marathon, so it’s a work in progress. I joined our local running club, Running Club North, and have been running as much as I can. I am still slow and I walk when I need to, but I finish every race I start. It’s not about time for me…it’s about the journey and the finish.
I joined RW+ because I wanted tips for improving my runs, not so much my time but strength and endurance. I love the training tips, especially tips for the treadmill, breathing and strength.
Five years ago, I would have never said this but, I love running! I love the sense of accomplishment and especially the running community. I make a new friend with each race that I run. The draw for me is the support and motivation from the other runners; even if I am dead last in my age group, there are always runners at the finish line to cheer me on. I always feel better, mentally and physically, after I run.
Most of my runs during the harsh Alaska winter are on my treadmill, but I don’t mind. Sometimes I put on my ice cleats and run along the road in front of my house. My favorite runs are trail runs, although I have to be careful not to trip on tree roots! I love being on the trail, listening to nature, and just moving. It’s exhilarating.
I love my Brooks shoes; I have a pair for the treadmill, a pair for trail runs, and a pair for pavement.
My favorite after-race snacks are Nutter Butter cookies. I don’t know why, they just hit the spot.
My running goal is to continue running as long as I am physically able. I would love to finish an entire marathon. My daughter has been an inspiration to me as she just decided one day to run a marathon…she has now completed two. I’ll get there.
