How the Royal Family Celebrated Easter This Year

This year, the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused the world to celebrate spring holidays like Passover and Easter a bit differently. The royal family is no different.

On Saturday, April 11, the Queen sent a voice message from Windsor Castle where she and Prince Philip are self isolating. On her official Instagram account, she posted a voice message over the image of a burning candle. "This year, Easter will be different for many of us," she said. "Many religions have festivals which celebrate light overcoming darkness. Such occasions are often accompanied by the lighting of candles. They seem to speak to every culture, and appeal to people of all faiths, and of none. They are lit on birthday cakes and to mark family anniversaries, when we gather happily around a source of light. It unites us."

For their part, Prince William and Kate Middleton are staying home at Kensington Palace. They shared an image of the outside of their home with the message, "Wishing you all a safe and happy Easter."

In 2019, most of the royal family celebrated the holiday together attending church services at St. George's Chapel. For the occasion, Kate wore a blue Alexander McQueen dress and Emmy London pumps.
