Royal Families Around the World React to the News of Queen Elizabeth's Death

Royal families from nations around the world extended condolences to the British royal family after it was announced that Queen Elizabeth II had died at Balmoral Palace on September 8, 2022. As head of state, the Queen performed official duties with numerous other royals over the years and became close personal friends with many of them in the process.

The Netherlands

"We remember Queen Elizabeth II with deep respect and great affection," said King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima, and Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands in a statement. "Steadfast and wise, she dedicated her long life to serving the British people. We feel a strong bond with the United Kingdom and its royal family, and we share their sorrow at this time. We are very grateful for our countries' close friendship, to which Queen Elizabeth made such an unforgettable contribution."

United Arab Emirates

“I extend my sincere condolences to the family of Queen Elizabeth II and the people of the UK,” wrote Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Twitter, “Her Majesty was a close friend of the UAE and a beloved & respected leader whose long reign was characterised by dignity, compassion & a tireless commitment to serving her country.”

Spain

“Deeply saddened by the sorrowful news of the passing away of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, your beloved Mother, I would like to offer Your Majesty and the British people, on my behalf and on behalf of the Spanish Government and people, our most heartfelt condolences.” wrote King Felipe of Spain in a telegram to King Charles III, which was printed in The Olive Press.

Belgium

"It is with immense sadness that we learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," said King Philippe and Queen Mathilde in a statement.

Norway

"My family and I are deeply saddened to receive the news that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has passed away," King Harold of Norway wrote in a condolence letter to King Charles III.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Your Majesty and the members of the Royal Family. For nearly a century, Her Majesty devoted her life to the service of the Commonwealth, following the British people through good days and bad, in times of happiness and sorrow. We send our deepest condolences to the British people on the loss of their beloved Queen. On a personal note, I am mourning the loss of a dear relative and confidant friend. My family and I wish Your Majesty and your family all the strength and comfort you need in this time of grief."

Sweden

"My family and I are deeply saddened to learn of the death of my dear relative Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," wrote King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden.

"The Queen served her countries and the Commonwealth with outstanding dedication and duty. She has been a constant presence, not only in British society but also internationally. She has always been dear to my family and a precious link in our shared family history. We offer our heartfelt condolences to Her Majesty’s family and her peoples."

Denmark

"Your mother was very important to me and my family," wrote Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. "She was a towering figure among the European monarchs and a great inspiration to us all."

Japan

"I express my heartfelt sorrow and deep sadness. From my heart, I declare my gratitude and esteem for her many achievements and contributions." said Emperor Naruhito of Japan in statement released Friday.
