The Rock Says He and His Family Tested Positive for COVID-19
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced in an Instagram video that he and his family recently contracted COVID-19—and he’s using the diagnosis as a teachable moment for fans.
In the video, Johnsons says he, his wife Lauren Hashian, and his two daughters—ages 2 and 4—all tested positive for COVID-19. The Rock calls the virus “one of the most challenging and difficult things we have ever had to endure as a family.”
“I wish it was only me who tested positive, but it wasn’t. It was my entire family, so this one was a real kick in the gut," Johnson says in the video. "But I am happy to tell you guys that we as a family are good. We are on the other end of it. We are on the other side. We are no longer contagious and we are, thank god, healthy.”
Johnson says his daughters experienced mild symptoms, which he calls a “silver lining” among the family diagnosis. But the actor adds that he and his wife experienced more severe symptoms, calling it “a rough go.”
“We got through it as a family,” Johnsons says in the video. “We are stronger. We are better. And we did it together.”
The actor says he and his family contracted COVID-19 when “very close family friends” visited their home. Johnson says his family and those close family friends were “incredibly disciplined" when following social distancing guidelines, adding that he and his family have been in complete isolation since March except for rare visits with their inner circle. And it so happens one of those visits lead to Johnson’s family contracting COVID-19.
“My takeaway here isn’t necessarily keep [your loved ones] away. I’m not saying that," Johnson says. "But what I am saying is now apply even a greater discipline to having people over to your house.”
In the video, Johnson says he will have any further visitors to his home tested before they visit with his family, and suggests his family will be regularly tested as well.
The Rock also credits boosting his immune system for helping him clear COVID-19. The actor says he’s talked to numerous doctors and experts who all suggested taking antioxidants and vitamins, and staying hydrated as core ways to support immune health to help fight COVID-19.
“Give yourself a shot. Give yourself a chance. Stack the deck in your favor," Johnson says. "Have your immune system boosted so you can get on the other side of COVID-19 hopefully stronger and healthier.”
Johnson also took time in his 12-minute video to advocate for wearing face masks, which the CDC suggests will help stop the spread of COVID-19. Currently, 34 states and Washington, D.C. have statewide mandates to encourage the wearing of face coverings in public.
“It baffles me that some people out there, including some politicians, will take this idea of wearing masks and make it part of a political agenda," Johnson says. "It has nothing to do with politics. Wear a mask. It is a fact. It is the right thing to do, and it’s the responsible thing to do.”
In the caption of the video, The Rock says his message is simple: Stay disciplined. Boost your immune system. Commit to wellness. Wear your mask. Protect your family. Be strict about having people over your house or gatherings. Stay positive. And care for your fellow human beings.
“I do believe in hope. I do believe in optimism. And I do believe in our doctors, our epidemiologists, our scientists who are all working so hard to deliver the vaccines for us," Johnson says. "But that’s then. This is now. What we can do now is control the controllables.”
