Robots Will Design, Build, and Operate Seoul’s New Robot Museum

Some people embrace artificial intelligence – others fear it. But at one museum in South Korea, everyone can marvel at it.

The new Robot Science Museum (RSM) in Seoul, South Korea will shine the spotlight on robots from the beginning; putting them in charge of designing and building the structure, according to New Atlas. Robots will mold, weld, assemble, and polish the museum’s facade while drones will map out the construction site, conduct inspections, and provide security. Concrete pieces for the surrounding area will be constructed by 3-D printers.

The project is being led by the Turkish design firm Melike Altinisik Architects, which won the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s design competition. Melike Altinisik said in a statement that the museum “is not only going to exhibit robots but actually from design, manufacturing to construction and services robots will be in charge. In other words RSM will start its ‘first exhibition’ with ‘its own construction’ by robots on site.”

While plans are already underway, the construction of the museum is set to begin early 2020, with the museum expected to be completed and officially opened in late 2022. Once finished, robots will be providing service and operating the museum, creating what designboom calls a “universe for robots and their visitors.”
