Rihanna Says She and Drake ‘Don’t Have a Friendship Now’
Rihanna and Drake’s on-again, off-again relationship always made us believe in love. It’s been a while since the two last called it off, though, and in a new interview, Rihanna opened up about the state of her relationship— or, more accurately, her non-relationship — with the “God’s Plan” singer.
“We don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either,” Rihanna told Vogue in her new cover story. “It is what it is.”
The topic came up when Vogue writer Chioma Nnadi asked Rihanna about her watershed night at the 2016 MTV VMAs. The singer gave four epic performances and received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award, presented to her by Drake. In the Toronto rapper’s introduction, he showered her with praise and confessed his undying love for her. Rihanna swerved him hard when she took her trophy.
“The VMAs is such a fan-focused awards show, so having that energy around me, and knowing the people who had received the award in the past, made it feel like a big deal,” Rihanna said, wincing at the mention of Drake’s name, according to Vogue. “Waiting through that speech was probably the most uncomfortable part. I don’t like too many compliments; I don’t like to be put on blast.”
Rihanna hasn’t slowed down at all since her VMAs achievement — her latest major project will see her back on the big screen in the highly anticipated Ocean’s 8, opening June 8, and she’s also working on a reggae album.
