Rihanna Had a 4th Fabulous Outfit Change During the 2023 Oscars
Leave it to Rihanna to wear not one, not two, but three incredible looks at the 95th annual Academy Awards. And later, at an after-party, she debuted a fourth.
The singer was first caught on video walking into Los Angeles's Dolby Theatre in a gray Eagles T-shirt, black Vans sneakers, an olive green bucket hat, a matching tote bag, and sunglasses.
Soon after, she stepped onto the red carpet, where she changed into an Ala?a ensemble composed of a dark brown leather bra and maxi skirt set layered over a matching sheer mesh turtleneck top. The showstopping skirt included thigh cutouts on the side and a dramatic train. She accessorized with Moussaieff High Jewellery and strappy heels.
The pop star wore her hair up in a spiky bun. As for her glam, she wore shimmering silver eye shadow, rosy blush, and a bright red lip.
Rihanna changed into another glamorous look to perform her song "Lift Me Up" from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The track, which is nominated for Best Original Song, earned the singer her first Oscar nomination. Other nominees include Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand" from Top Gun: Maverick, "This Is a Life" from Everything Everywhere All at Once, "Naatu Naatu" from RRR, and "Applause" from Tell It like a Woman.
For the performance, the singer looked incredible in a black bra embellished with a curtain of crystals and featuring sheer mesh straps. She paired it with matching black pants emblazoned with a golden floral design. She finished the look—custom-made for her by Maison Margiela by John Galliano—with black pumps, black leather opera gloves, layered diamond necklaces, a thick diamond bracelet worn over her gloves, and diamond drop earrings.
"Lift Me Up," which also nabbed a Golden Globe nomination, marks the first single that Rihanna has dropped in six years.
While boyfriend A$AP Rocky did not pose for photos with Rihanna, he was seen amongst the crowd, proudly joining in the standing ovation for Rihanna after her performance.
Rihanna then returned to her seat in yet another outfit. The singer opted for a custom-made Bottega Veneta look, including a siren green off-the-shoulder silk bustier and skirt, a shearling stole set, and leather gloves.
Black Panther director Ryan Coogler previously spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about getting Rihanna to end her musical hiatus. He explained that he wanted the film's closing song to not only honor the memory of leading star Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020, but to also reflect the experience of parenthood.
"It's her experience with loss in there, and her being a mother. She's a new person now. [Parenthood] changes you to your core. I hear it in her voice. It's her, but it's a new her," Coogler told the outlet.
Last month, Rihanna delivered a historic performance for her first Super Bowl Halftime Show, where she subtly announced that she is pregnant with her second child with Rocky.
"When I first got the call to do it again this year, I was like, 'You sure?' Like, I'm three months postpartum, like, should I be making major decisions like this right now? Like, I might regret this," she said during the Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show press conference. "But when you become a mom, there's something that just happens where you feel like you could take on the world, you can do anything."
Finally, to attend Beyoncé and Jay-Z's annual post-Oscars bash at Chateau Marmont, Rihanna changed into a silver sequined bralette and matching skirt styled with a pink robe and a lot of diamonds.
