Riding the waves of emotion on the solo path of trying to conceive
The journey of trying to conceive can be an emotional rollercoaster filled with a multitude of feelings and uncertainties. For single mothers by choice who are embarking on this path, the emotions may be further amplified as you navigate the challenges of infertility alone—as it did for me. I want to share a journal entry that captures the whirlwind of emotions that come with trying to conceive repeatedly.
Day 1, Round 5
I honestly don’t know what I am feeling. It’s such a mix of emotions right now.
Disappointed: to start yet another round
Scared: to go through another round
Sad: just sad
Hopelessness: this may not be the round
Hopefulness: this could be the round
Lost:what do I do? What can I do differently?
Alone: starting over again by myself
Strong: I can do this again
Grateful: I am able to do this again and for all I do have
Confused: should I take a break?
Calm: assured that this will happen
The process of trying to conceive often evokes a wide array of emotions, from disappointment to hopefulness, confusion to strength and everything in between, this emotional whirlwind reflects the intricate nature of the journey.
So how do we navigate these various emotions while staying strong and focused on our path to motherhood?
Acknowledging and processing these emotions is vital for emotional well-being during the trying-to-conceive journey. As someone who has been on this journey for four years now, I’ve learned a lot along the way about how to persevere through the highs and lows. Here are a few strategies I used to navigate the emotional rollercoaster.
Navigating emotions on the trying-to-conceive journey
Journal
Journalling is a powerful tool for self-reflection and self-awareness. Continue to express your emotions, thoughts and concerns in writing. Journaling allows you to explore the depths of your feelings and gain clarity amidst the chaos. There was so much I was able to uncover and process through writing.
Seek support
Connect with others who are going through or have experienced similar challenges. Online support groups, forums or therapy sessions provide guidance, empathy and encouragement. Sharing our experiences and hearing others’ stories creates a sense of community and understanding that can be immensely comforting.
Self-care
Prioritize self-care activities that promote relaxation, stress reduction and overall well-being. Engage in activities that bring you joy and provide an outlet for emotional release. Whether it’s exercise, meditation, creative pursuits or spending time in nature, taking care of yourself is crucial during this journey.
Set boundaries
Establish boundaries to protect your emotional well-being. If well-meaning individuals offer advice that does not resonate with your experience, politely inform them about the complexities of your journey. Take breaks from fertility-related discussions or content to create space for emotional healing and rejuvenation.
Cultivate patience
Recognize that the journey may take time and that patience is essential. Practice self-compassion and allow yourself to experience a range of emotions without judgment. Trust in the timing that is meant for you, and believe in your strength and resilience.
Find joy
Despite the challenges, it’s crucial to find moments of joy along the way. Let’s incorporate activities that bring us happiness, no matter how small they may seem. Indulge in hobbies, spend quality time with loved ones, or explore self-care practices that bring a smile to our faces.
Express gratitude
In the midst of navigating the emotional rollercoaster, practicing daily gratitude can be a powerful tool. Taking a moment each day to reflect on the things we are grateful for can shift our focus towards the positives in our lives and cultivate a sense of appreciation.
The path of trying to conceive is a deeply personal and emotional journey, and my journal entry highlights the complex range of emotions I experienced on that day. By acknowledging and processing your own feelings, you honor your emotional well-being and pave the way for resilience and growth.
Remember, you are not alone on this journey. Embrace the power of your emotions, trust in the process and believe in the unwavering love and resilience that will ultimately lead you to the fulfillment of your dream of becoming a mother.
