Regina King Sparkled at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards
Regina King has mastered the virtual red carpet. Zooming in from a hotel room to the E! telecast of the 2021 Golden Globes red carpet, the director-actress wore a sparkling dress by Louis Vuitton, which featured an asymmetrical neckline and front panels of silver sequins, accessorized with diamond jewelry by Forevermark. Though we are still in awe over the vibrant blue Schiaparelli Couture that she wore to 2020 Emmys, this stunner served as a worthy follow-up.
King is nominated in the best director category for her film, One Night in Miami, marking only the second time a Black woman has been up for the honor (the first was Ava DuVernay for Selma in 2015). She is competing against Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), David Fincher (Mank), Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7), and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland). This marks the first time that three women are up for the award.
"It's bittersweet, the fact that it's 2021 and this is just happening," King said of being among the women directors making history at this year's ceremony, adding that she's "happy that it is a conversation" and hopes it leads to a shift.
Back at the 2019 Golden Awards, where she took home the best supporting actress statue for If Beale Street Could Talk, King vocalized her commitment to having 50 percent of her production staff comprise 50 percent women.
"Time's up times two. The reason why we do this is because we understand our microphones are big and we're speaking for everyone," she said at the end of her speech. "I'm going to use my platform right now to say, in the next two years ... I am making a vow to make sure everything I produce is 50 percent women and I challenge anyone out there who is in a position of power—not just in our industry, in all industries—I challenge you to challenge yourself to stand with us in solidarity and do the same."
