Rand Gauthier Sold The 'Pam & Tommy' Sex Tape For $175 A Pop From The Trunk Of His Car
Way before Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian had sex tapes, Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee had their own private tape stolen and released for distribution.
It was a massive—huge—scandal when it happened back in the ’90s. And the new Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy takes you through the whole thing, told in the premiere episode from the POV of Rand Gauthier, played by Seth Rogen.
In the miniseries, and in real life, Gauthier was an electrician that Tommy hired who got ticked off after not being paid for months of work. Gauthier was eventually fired after standing up to Tommy. And when he tried to get his tools back, Tommy threatened him with a gun.
So, Gauthier decided to get back at Tommy by stealing the M?tley Crüe drummer’s safe. Inside was the sex tape—along with guns and jewelry Gauthier planned to sell in order to recoup the money that Tommy owed him.
Gauthier came up with the idea to sell the tape online—and the rest is history.
But what happened to Rand Gauthier? Did he go to jail? What’s he up to now? Here’s what you need to know to get caught up on current events.
Where is Rand Gauthier now?
Apparently, Gauthier doesn’t exactly feel bad for exposing Tommy and Pam’s sex life to the world, because he pretty much said so in a 2014 Rolling Stone interview. In it, Gauthier said that he thought the tape was “cute.” He continued, “They're in love and a couple and they're just having fun with each other, and I think that's great.”
Gauthier also said that he was “jealous,” adding, “I wish I had something like that." Gauthier said that he sometimes tells people he stole the infamous sex tape, but nobody actually believes him.
Rand is now in his 60s, living in Santa Rosa, Calif., and growing pot out of his garage, according to Rolling Stone. He still runs an electrical services company, and it is likely he has a relatively modest lifestyle.
How much did he make off the sex tape?
Despite a brief windfall, it seems like almost all the money Rand earned from selling the first few copies of the celebrity sex tape quickly dried up, per The Cinemaholic.
It is also unclear if he even got his fair share for the tapes that were sold. Though the legitimate sales of the video reportedly crossed $77 million in the first year alone, most of the money went to Seth Warshavsky’s Internet Entertainment Group, according to the Cinemaholic.
Did Rand Gauthier go to jail?
Actually, no. After Gauthier posted the sex tape online, bootleggers stole copies and started to circulate them widely. He couldn’t sue the bootleggers, since he stole the tape in the first place and didn’t own the copyright.
Gauthier had to borrow money from mob boss Louis "Butchie" Peraino, who wanted his loan back. So, Gauthier had to pay back his debt by working for the mob, per Rolling Stone.
Gauthier now leads a pretty low profile life—he doesn’t have a public social media account and there are no recent photos of him online.
What's his net worth?
Rand Gauthier’s net worth is estimated to be around $200,000, according to The Cinemaholic.
