'Queer Eye' star Jonathan Van Ness is the first solo, non-female cover star on 'Cosmo UK' in 35 years
Jonathan Van Ness is continuing to break boundaries — this time, as the first solo, non-female cover star of Cosmopolitan UK in 35 years.
The Queer Eye star took to Instagram on Monday to share a photo of his cover on the British magazine, with content aimed at young women, where he stunned in a creamsicle dress by Christian Siriano and a pair of sneakers. In his post, he also announced that his appearance on the cover was a first for the mag in over three decades.
According to a Cosmo UK representative, the last non-female cover star was Boy George, when he was featured on the magazine — with curly blonde hair, sparkling drop earrings and fuchsia lipstick — in December 1984, with the cover line, “Why Boy George would kill for love.” Since then, the male group New Direction has also appeared on the cover, in 2012.
“My body is ready,” Van Ness, who identifies as gender non-binary, captioned the photo on his Instagram, a day ahead of the cover story’s release. Already, people have expressed their excitement about Cosmo UK’s cover choice in Van Ness’s Instagram comments.
“Omfg! Congrats babe this is MAJOR!!!” skier Gus Kenworthy commented, while plus-size model Tess Holliday wrote, “Yes babyyyyyyy!! We are both Cosmo UK cover stars now!”
Van Ness’s ice skating friend, icon Michelle Kwan, even took note of the impressive cover, saying, “I need a copy.”
Cosmopolitan UK also addressed its groundbreaking choice by including, “Yep. We did it. You’re totally welcome,” in the magazine’s cover lines.
The cover’s debut comes just one day after World AIDS Day on Sunday, which Van Ness also recognized on his social media, not long after revealing that he’s been living with HIV.
