The Queen Uses Gin to Make Her Diamonds Sparkle and Now I Love Her Even More
Queen Elizabeth's dresser Angela Kelly revealed that she uses gin to make Her Majesty's diamonds sparkle.
She also shared her secret to getting rid of the Queen's hairspray stains.
Look, I know heavy is the head that wears the crown and whatever, but Queen Elizabeth is truly living the good life. The royal family try not to remind everyone how insanely rich they are all that often (don't want to piss off the taxpayers, etc), but new details from the Queen's longtime dresser Angela Kelly shed some light on just how fancy Her Majesty's life really is.
In her book The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, The Dresser and the Wardrobe (via People), Kelly reveals that part of her job is making sure the Queen's jewels—including her tiaras—are peak glittery. And she has a pretty unconventional way of making them shine bright like a diamond: gin.
"A little gin and water come in handy to give the diamonds extra sparkle," Kelly wrote, adding "just don’t tell the jeweler!"
Kelly also talks about getting the Queen ready for formal events, saying she'd lay out her jewels and diadem on a tray that belonged to Queen Mary.
Kelly's book was written with the Queen's approval, who she's been working for under the very official title Personal Advisor and Curator (The Queen’s Jewellery, Insignias and Wardrobe) and In-House Designer. Kelly takes care of Queen Elizabeth's jewelry and clothing as part of her job, and also helps put together her lewks. Naturally, her book is full of fun royal tips, including "A drop of washing-up liquid and water will get rid of any hairspray stains.”
Cool, now excuse me while I go dunk my fake earrings in some stale beer.
