Town & Country understands that Queen Elizabeth departed Windsor Castle last week for a long-planned private weekend away. Per the Daily Mirror, the Queen was "delighted" to be able to make a journey to Sandringham, her home in Norfolk, where, later this year, she plans to spend the Christmas break with her extended family. This is a particularly meaningful festive period for the royal family, because it will be their first without Prince Philip, who died in April at the age of 99.
"Her Majesty is very much looking forward to hosting her family at her Norfolk home for the Christmas holiday and there is much preparation to be done in time to accommodate everyone who has been invited," a royal source told the Mirror.
“The Queen has many happy memories of being at Sandringham with the family over Christmas and was in the firm belief that she was far better off being there in person to oversee everything as much as possible."
Reportedly, the Queen was cleared to travel by her doctors, following a period of convalescence after her recent stay in hospital.
Queen Elizabeth was hospitalized on October 20th "for some preliminary investigations," and subsequently advised to rest by medical staff. She returned to work at Windsor Castle the following day, and carried on with "light, desk-based duties," completing several virtual engagements during her recovery.
Since the Queen is entitled to medical privacy, Buckingham Palace did not specify why the Queen had been hospitalized. She stayed overnight in hospital for practical reasons, and also out of an abundance of caution on her medical team's part.
