Punxsutawney Phil’s 2024 Groundhog Day Prediction Results in Series of Wild Memes

Today is Groundhog Day, meaning the national spotlight has been placed on Punxsutawney Phil.

Every year, people wake up at the crack of dawn in hopes that the resident groundhog forecaster will tell them the cold and dark winter season will come to an end sooner rather than later.

The annual event is no stranger to memes, either, with social media users sharing mildly threatening jokes in the hours leading up to Punxsutawney Phil's big moment.

Take this one, for example, which took the heartbreaking scene from Anchorman when a motorcyclist (played by Jack Black) kicked Ron Burgundy's (Will Ferrell) dog Baxter off the bridge and added new context, "Me to Punxsutawney Phil if he sees his shadow."

Or this one, which screengrabbed a moment in The Sopranos that showed Tony (James Gandolfini) disheveled and exhausted, alongside the caption "Punxsutawney Phil being dragged out of bed to see if he can see his shadow."

Despite Punxsutawney Phil not seeing his shadow and predicting an early spring–the preferred option for many–internet users still found a way to make this year's results into memes.

A different X (formerly Twitter) user captioned a clip of Patrick Beverly celebrating the Minnesota Timberwolves victory over the Los Angeles Clippers as Aloe Blacc's "The Mann" played in the background, "Punxsutawney Phil beat the 6 weeks of winter allegations."

Someone else connected the groundhog's tradition to Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Pepe Silva theory, joking, "Me every year explaining how Punxsutawney Phil is actually never wrong and how his translators might actually just be really bad at understanding Groundhogese."

Social media users were also more literal, with another X user sharing a clip from the 1993 film Groundhog Day along with the comment, "Today Punxsutawney Phil is the star."
