Princess Diana Always Pulled This Fashion Trick — Even With Swimwear

There have been a handful of people throughout history whom we can truly claim had timeless style, and Princess Diana is definitely one of them. Other royals, such as Kate Middleton, still end up channeling her on special occasions, and to this day, we look to Diana's old outfits for quick doses of inspiration.

One of her go-to styling tricks was coordinating her look or wearing a matching set. It wasn't uncommon to spot Diana in a polka-dot skirt paired with polka-dot socks, or to see her finish off a dress with the same color hat. She even pulled this fashion move on vacation in 1997, shortly before she passed away. While having fun in St. Tropez, Diana wore a multi-colored bathing suit with a cover-up of the same pattern, creating a full, eye-catching beach outfit.

With the summer in full swing, we've been struggling to find cover-ups that are both cute and practical. While we love our oversized shirts and sheer tops, a sarong and swimsuit set like Diana's would no doubt make it extremely easy to transition from the water to other activities, like going for a walk or grabbing a bite to eat (with a mask, of course).

Thankfully, plenty of brands are on the same page. Summersalt sells wrap skirts that perfectly match its swimwear ($65; summersalt.com), while Solid & Striped's Cora bikini top ($84; shopbop.com) and Savannah skirt ($168; shopbop.com) could pass as a full outfit on any old summer day — no water necessary. Not into the full matchy-matchy vibe? A plain white or black sarong, like Melissa Odabash's embroidered style ($125; nordstrom.com), is another great choice, as it will easily pair well with any one-piece or bikini, especially those in neutral shades.
