Prince William Did the Sweetest Thing After Diana Was Devastated by Affair Scandal
Prince William constantly proves he has his mother's caring nature. He loves his children more than anything, supports the same charities and even created a new anti-bullying initiative in her name. But he also showed his generous spirit way back when Princess Diana needed it the most.
In her explosive 1995 BBC interview, the young royal opened up about her failed marriage, struggles with mental illness and conflicts with the royal family. Interviewer Martin Bashir also asked Diana about a recent tell-all book, Princess in Love, that alleged an extramarital relationship with James Hewitt. While Diana confirmed the affair, she also shared its impact on her children.
"I was absolutely devastated when this book appeared, because I trusted him, and because, again, I worried about the reaction of my children," she said of Hewitt. She remembers rushing down to talk to the princes the moment it arrived, but then something unexpected happened.
"William produced a box of chocolates," Diana recalled, "and said, 'Mummy, I think you've been hurt. These are to make you smile again.'"
Instead of expecting comfort, the 12-year-old knew his mom needed support more than he did. Over the next few years, Diana would endure a painful divorce, and her son still stuck with her through it all. When the final agreement stripped Diana of her title, he reportedly told her, "Don't worry, Mummy. I will give it back to you one day when I am king."
Even though she's no longer here today, there's no doubt Princess Diana would approve of his most recent acts of kindness. While the Duke of Cambridge doesn't necessarily hand out chocolates anymore, he still helps others smile with his Heads Together campaign, among other charitable initiatives. She would be so proud of him.
