Prince Harry and Meghan Markle: "We Stand With the People of Ukraine"
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are standing in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. In a statement posted to their Archewell website on Thursday, the royal couple urged world leaders to support the nation, and condemn the Russian invasion. "Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and all of us at Archewell stand with the people of Ukraine against this breach of international and humanitarian law and encourage the global community and its leaders to do the same," they write.
The statement comes as Russian troops entered Ukraine, approaching the capital city of Kyiv. Thursday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" in Ukraine, invading the country. In response, President Joe Biden announced sanctions on Russia, saying, "Putin is the aggressor. Putin chose this war. And now he and his country will bear the consequences."
This is not the first time Prince Harry and Meghan have dipped their toe into world politics; they've spoken out about the need for humanitarian aid in Haiti and commented on Afghanistan, where Prince Harry served two tours in the British army, for a total of ten years.
"When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realize it or not," Meghan and Harry wrote in August 2021. "And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we, as a people, are being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action — together."
Aside from the Sussexes, the royal family has yet to comment on what’s happening in Ukraine, but the court circular showed that Prince William visited MI6 on Wednesday and met with the Defense Secretary yesterday.
