Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Just Paid Back a Ton of Money Spent on Frogmore Cottage Renovations
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are sticking to their promise to pay off their U.K. home, Frogmore Cottage.
A spokesperson for the couple announced in a statement on Monday, “A contribution has been made to the Sovereign Grant by The Duke of Sussex. This contribution as originally offered by Prince Harry has fully covered the necessary renovation costs of Frogmore Cottage, a property of Her Majesty The Queen, and will remain the U.K. residence of The Duke and his family.”
If you didn’t know, the SG is the public money that Her Majesty receives each year for expenses, which includes renovating official royal residences. And while the spokesman did not reveal the amount of money the Duke and Duchess of Sussex paid back, public records show that almost $3 million was spent on the home during 2019.
According to Town & Country, the money spent on the cottage only applied to the structural renovations and the duke and duchess had already paid for the fixtures and other fittings themselves.
Even though they are no longer working royals, the family opted to keep the U.K. residence that Queen Elizabeth gifted them in April 2019. However, because the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are striving for financial independence and no longer accepting funds from the Sovereign Grant, they promised to repay the taxpayer money last year. From then on, they have paid for the cost of running the home and have paid taxes on it. For all intents and purposes, it’s simply their family’s international home that just so happens to be on the grounds of Windsor Castle.
Looks like when these two decide to do something, they follow through.
