Buckingham Palace Confirms That Prince Harry Will Attend King Charles's Coronation

Surrounding the rollout for Prince Harry's memoir Spare, there was much discussion surrounding his relationship with his father, King Charles. "If you are invited to the coronation, will you come?" ITV's Tom Bradby asked Prince Harry, wondering if Harry and Meghan Markle will travel to the UK this spring for Charles's coronation.

Harry responds, "There's a lot that can happen between now and then. But, the door is always open. The ball is in their court." He adds, "There's a lot to be discussed and I really hope that they're willing to sit down and talk about it."

In another point in the ITV interview, Prince Harry says, "I want a family, not an institution." In yet another, he says, "I would like to get my father back. I would like to have my brother back."

Now, we know the answer on the attendance of Harry and Meghan: On April 12, Buckingham Palace said in a statement they were "pleased to confirm that The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on May 6th. The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet."

A spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed to Town & Country that Harry will attend, saying "The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation service at Westminster Abbey on May 6th. The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet."

In early March, a spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed to T&C that "the Duke has recently received email correspondence from His Majesty's office regarding the coronation. An immediate decision on whether The Duke and Duchess will attend will not be disclosed by us at this time."

The news came shortly after a report in The Times suggested that "peace talks" were being planned between the Sussexes and the rest of the royals ahead of the coronation. Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was reportedly tapped as a mediator. Welby, too, is set to officiate at the coronation. In mid-March, the Telegraph reported that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, were not invited, as they are considered too young to attend.

Oprah, a close friend of the Sussexes, told Gayle King "I think they should do what they feel is best for them and for their family." She added, however, "They haven't asked me my opinion." All possibilities remain on the table: Both Harry and Meghan attending, just Harry attending, or both of them skipping.

King Charles's coronation will take place on May 6, 2023. In a statement, Buckingham Palace said, "The Ceremony will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside The Queen Consort. The Coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry." May 6 is a significant date for the royals for many reasons—including the birthday of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's eldest, Prince Archie Harrison. Archie will turn four on the day of his grandfather's coronation.
